Sony Xperia Z1 Review

Following the release of the Sony Xperia Z and the Sony Xperia Z1 compact, the next phone release in the line had a lot to live up to. By adding Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 20.7-megapixel camera, it seems the Sony Xperia Z1 is doing its job!

The Sony Xperia Z1 has several new and (some) enhanced features as compared to its ancestors. The new device is made up of a two-tone aluminum frame for enhanced brightness, clarity and sharpens. This is definitely a bonus. The device contains a 5-inch, HD resolution screen of 1920 X 1080, making it astonishingly clear and sharp. Sony has included 441ppl 16-million-color contrast for well-detailed images and videos. The upgraded phone also provides users with the ability to easily zoom in and out simply by swiping your fingers in and out on the screen. Also, the device now includes the Sony TV Tech software to insure these enhanced images remain consistent and never disappoint. The Sony Xperia Z1 also comes with an attached, scratch - proof screen protector for added security. The clarity of calls (in and out) is crystal clear through the regular speaker or headphone. However, the speakerphone option is less than perfect. Most sounds come out muffled or choppy so keep that in mind if you are a regular speakerphone user.

Unfortunately, the new device has some features that could potentially make or break it for customers. The Sony Xperia Z1 is 144.4mm tall and 8.5mm thick, making it heavier (169 g) and a bit bulkier than the previous versions. However, this just takes some adjusting from the new user. With moderate usage, including camera work, the battery life lasted 29 hours before needing to be recharged. With excessive usage, such as constant video play, the device will last a little over twelve hours. However, a warning to all, the battery life will drain in a matter of 4-5 hours (with moderate use) if the Wi-Fi is constantly activated, not just in use. So if you aren’t using the Internet, do not leave it activated or you will be charging this device rather frequently.

One of the bonuses of this upgraded phone is the ports on its body. Although the headphone jack, charging port, USB and microSD ports haven’t changed too much, Sony has added some impressive and handy new port placements. The camera button on the Sony Xperia Z1 is now located on the right hand side of the phone, joining the volume controls and power button. Also, with a front view and rear view camera, this phone allows for easy Skype (or any other webcam app devices) use. It is great for conference calls or just catching up with friends. The phone also contains two holes in the top corners of the device; this is for the additional use of a wrist strap. The Sony Xperia Z1 is now dust proof, waterproof and has IP58 certification. The IP58 certification states that the device can be submerged underwater for up to half an hour, before any damage begins to occur. Not only is this great new for the safety of your device, but this also means you can take underwater pictures and videos without needing any excess cases or insurance.

  • Pros:
Waterproof for up to 30 minutes (1,5m); Enhanced performance; Good battery life
  • Cons:
    Bulkier; Easily smudged screen protector
