Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Review

Xiaomi is one of the few Chinese brands that have made it big. Started off as a company known to imitate Apple, Xiaomi has now become a leader in innovation and their latest Mi Mix smartphone is an example of that. Their Redmi series of smartphones have always been received very well thanks to the great hardware that comes with it and also the affordable price tag. After China, Xiaomi’s biggest market is India and the king of the budget smartphones here is their all new Xiaomi Redmi Note 3.

The phone was launched around 4 months after the launch of the Redmi Note 2, but the number of changes from its predecessor are immense. The phone has been flying off shelves ever since its launch in India and they’ve sold over 2.3 million units just in India. This is the in-depth review of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and why it is undoubtedly the best budget smartphone right now.

Design and Build Quality

Most of you might be expecting a plastic build for a Redmi Note phone, but that is not the case with the Redmi Note 3. It comes with a metal unibody that has curved edges to allow it to be held properly. The textured metal at the rear has a great finish and the phone weighs only 164g. The rear side has two plastic caps at the top and bottom for placing the antennas and they blend in seamlessly with the metal build. The buttons placed on the right-hand side are extremely tactile and they’ve incorporated very high-quality buttons. Overall, the build quality is more like that of a premium offering rather than a budget smartphone. The phone comes in three different colors, dark grey, gold and silver and each of them look spectacular.

Hardware and Performance

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is the first phone in the world to feature the Snapdragon 650 SoC. It comes with the Adreno 510 GPU which can handle high-end games with ease. In some countries, the phone comes with the MediaTek Helio X10 SoC. There are two variants of the Note 3 with different memory and storage configurations. The base variant comes with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage which can be further expanded up to 256GB via microSD.

The Redmi Note 3 Prime comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, which is expandable as well. If you can stretch out your budget a bit more, it is recommended to get the 3GB/32GB variant as opposed to the base variant.

The performance on the Redmi Note 3 was buttery smooth. The phone comes preinstalled with Android Lollipop with their MIUI skin on top of it. It is one of the most heavily skinned UIs out there, but it is also one of the most polished ones. The animations are smooth and the lack of an app drawer was never felt. A lot of customizations and features have also been provided by Xiaomi which makes it a memorable experience.

The biggest addition has to be the fingerprint sensor on the rear which is quick and accurate
The biggest addition has to be the fingerprint sensor on the rear which is quick and accurate

The USP of the Redmi Note 3 is definitely the inclusion of the fingerprint scanner on the rear. No other smartphone in this price bracket flaunted a fingerprint scanner and it was only after the launch of the Note 3 that smartphone makers took it seriously.

They’ve not tried to cut down costs with a cheap fingerprint scanner. It is quick and always on so that you can unlock your phone without turning on the screen. It can also be used for locking and unlocking apps. The Redmi Note 3 sports a 5.5-inch full HD display. Even though the full HD display is appreciated, it lacks a bit of saturation and contrast. Sunlight visibility and viewing angles are awesome.

Another big improvement of the Redmi Note 3 was the camera, at least on paper. It comes with a 16MP rear camera with an f2.0 aperture, so it should perform well in low light as well as well-lit conditions. The photos taken in good lighting are extremely good thanks to the new sensor and low aperture. But the same cannot be said about the photos take in low light. The images are really noisy and the natural colors are mostly lost. But considering the price bracket at which this device is offered, there is nothing much to complain about. At the front, we have a 5MP selfie camera and it does its job without any issues. The selfies turn out great with ample amount of detail and brilliant color reproduction. These were tested under well-lit conditions and don’t expect much in low light situations.

The phone measures just 8.6mm in thickness, but that doesn’t mean that Xiaomi has put a smaller battery inside the Redmi Note 3. The battery on the Redmi Note 3 is the biggest we’ve seen on a Redmi phone. It is a 4,050mAh battery that is an absolute beast on paper as well as in real-world usage. The battery was able to provide nearly 2 days of usage with a screen on time of more than 7 hours. But a slightly disappointing fact is that it doesn’t support the newer versions of QuickCharge and takes quite a lot of time to charge the battery completely.

It is hard not to recommend the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 to those who are looking for an amazing phone at a budget. One look at the specs and it will be hard to classify this one as a budget smartphone. The latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 SoC, 2GB or 3GB of RAM along with 16GB or 32GB of expandable storage, a good 5.5-inch full HD display, a decent camera and a mammoth battery make it a very promising smartphone. It is no surprise that the Redmi Note 3 is the most sold smartphone in India for 2016.

  • Pros:
Metal unibody with a beautiful curved design Brilliant performance with the Snapdragon 650 Battery life is incomparable to any other phone
  • Cons:
Display lacks contrast and saturation slightly Low light photography is poor Charging time is a bit long
Our score:
4 / 5
